NPI helps Community Health Center to Modernize Computer System

South Burlington, VT – February 5, 2002

Network Performance, Inc. has been working with the Community Health Center of Burlington since 1999. Our relationship began innocently enough, when a board member of the Center asked Eric Hart to come look around and see what we could suggest for improvements. This simple request blossomed into a long-term relationship that continues today. Eric saw the need for a detailed study and analysis of the Center's Information Systems as well as their future goals. NPI committed to making a donation of $5,000 worth of services to help remedy the areas needing immediate improvement, while helping to develop a long-term plan to renovate the Center's computer systems. This donation helped organize and modernize CHCB's fragmented computer systems to better meet the rising demands for low-cost medical care for the residents of the Old North End of Burlington. A modern computer system is essential to tracking the health history of the Center's many clients. NPI has donated an additional $5,000 of time and services over the next 3 years, for a total commitment of over $10,000.

This intensive multi-year effort has led to great improvements to CHCB's computer services. The initial relationship grew into a significant project involving a server upgrade and switch installation. We also helped research and implement Internet communications and interview and advise on the selection of a new network administrator. Over the course of this time, NPI worked closely with the CHCB staff to find additional donations from manufacturers. Thanks to a significant donation of software from Microsoft, another piece of their new technology is up and running within budget.

For over 30 years, CHCB has increased access to high quality health care for Vermonters, regardless of their ability to pay, through special programs that include: visits starting at $2.00 for the uninsured; free specialty clinics staffed by volunteer doctors; prescription assistance programs; social work; and interpreter services for non-English speaking patients. One of Burlington's family practices and one of only two non-profit, federally qualified health centers in Vermont, the Center provides comprehensive health and human services to uninsured, underinsured, low income residents and people experiencing homelessness. The Center's Homeless Health Care Program, in collaboration with five other local agencies, offers a full range of services at specialized clinics located at the Daystation for homeless adults and at Spectrum Youth and Family Services drop-in center for homeless and at risk youth.

This project serves as a great example of how businesses and not-for-profits can partner to help benefit the community.
