Virus Protection

Protection you can count on

With the increasing frequency of rapidly spreading, destructive computer viruses, enterprise-wide virus protection has become a core business requirement. Whether it arrives through infected files or e-mail attachments, a single virus can instantly bring your business to a halt. You need a rock-solid strategy for virus avoidance, detection, and eradication.

How does a virus work?

A virus is a program, usually disguised as something else, that causes an unexpected and usually undesirable event. A virus is often designed to automatically spread to other computer users through the address books associated with e-mail applications. Viruses can be transmitted as e-mail attachments, as downloads, or on a diskette or CD. The source of the contaminated e-mail, file, or CD is often someone you know who is unaware of the virus. Some viruses wreak havoc as soon as their code is executed; other viruses lie dormant until circumstances cause them to be executed by the computer.

Policies and training – the first line of defense

The first level of protection we recommend is company-wide policies and training about the handling of data and communications in and outside the office. Many virus infections can easily be prevented by the simple means of not permitting certain types of behaviors and communications. We can help your business develop policies for safe communication practices and review your rules to determine whether they are being followed. Training your staff is critical so they understand how their behavior can open your business to destruction and disruption. We can provide training for your Information System staff and business leaders that drives home the message about company policies and best practices to help prevent a virus outbreak.

Scanning for solid protection

The best protection against viruses is to know the origin of each file you access with your computer and avoid opening files from strangers. Unfortunately, some infected files come from friendly, known sources. That's why most businesses buy antivirus software that screens e-mail attachments, periodically checks network files, and scans Internet communications as they occur. When the software detects a virus, it quarantines and removes it before it does any further damage.

NPI recommends that you protect all the locations and protocols that may be vulnerable. The three locations to scan are workstations, servers, and gateways. The protocols to examine include (at a minimum) mail, Web, and FTP.

Antivirus software is sold on a subscription basis by a variety of manufacturers. It is critical to regularly download updates with the latest virus definitions. NPI can help you make sense of the many virus protection offerings and put together the best package for your business, including the use of automated updates to take the worry out of keeping up with the latest detection technology.
